The Flight Pathfinder is a solid body, steel-string ukulele that has a classic electric guitar shape, scaled down to tenor ukulele size. This ukulele has a twin cutaway shape that will be very familiar to guitarists. The transparent gloss finish allows the flaming on the maple top to be seen, which is as attractive as its graduated colour, which goes from a rich blue to a creamy yellow. The back and sides are a solid blue.

Unamplified, there’s enough volume for quiet practice, but the Pathfinder is made to be played through an amp. When doing so, you can use the selector switch to alternate between the single coil neck pickup, the humbucker at the bridge or both at the same time. With this you can achieve lots of classic electric tone and lose yourself experimenting with the tone settings too. Not a comment on this specific model in particular, but with an electric, having some effects to try to will always liven things up too.

The Pathfinder has a maple neck and fingerboard, flamed maple top, basswood back and sides and chrome hardwear, plus two fitted strap buttons – useful as a solid body weighs quite a bit more than a regular acoustic uke. The steel strings are tuned GCEA, with a low G, giving ukulele players the familiarity of their regular instruments with added flair of a true electric model.

The weight means the Pathfinder is most comfortable played seated or with a strap, but it isn’t excessive - just a little more than a normal uke. The fingerboard plays freely, leaving my only comment more of a rule for steel stringed instruments in general – which is that a lighter touch is required. While actually this makes fretting easier than a nylon strung ukulele - making the transition takes a little getting used to. Grip the neck like you might grip your acoustic uke and you can pull the strings a little sharp.

A steel string, solid body electro is something that can give a lot of fun and enjoyment, and in making one that is both serviceable and affordable, it opens the field up to more ukulele players. It isn’t as ‘boutique’ as more expensive competitors but crucially it is at a price where more people can experiment and make some noise!

A good quality blue padded gig bag is included too. Action and intonation are adjusted before it comes out - they’re a bit wayward when they arrive, but the necessary work is done before they leave (this is not an instrument to buy from a drop-shipping retailer, they MUST go through a workshop process first!)
