The Flight Pioneer tenor ukulele is part of Flight’s Rock series of steel-string tenor ukes, with a cherry red gloss finish and a classic body shape that is a homage to a certain famous manufacturer. Although not the first of this series to roll off the production line (which would have made the Pioneer name make more sense!), it’s a welcome addition to the line-up. In fact, it’s not the first ukulele to bear the name ‘Pioneer’ - I had my own World of Ukes Pioneer model some years back… but that’s enough about the name!

This solid body ukulele has steel strings and is strung GCEA with a low G. They play nicely, although uke players will have to adapt their style a little - chiefly as not as much pressure is needed to fret the Pioneer as a regular nylon-strung uke (that’s no bad thing, but you need a lighter touch). Without an amplifier there’s enough volume for quiet practice, but it’s when it’s plugged in that the Flight Pioneer ukulele will really come into it’s own. There are individual tone and volume controls for the neck and bridge pickups, and a selector switch allowing you to switch between the two, or both, giving you a great range of tones to experiment with.

The Pioneer from Flight Ukulele comes with a nicely padded blue, branded gig bag, and a jack to jack lead - so you just need an amp to get rocking!

These instruments are good quality, playable and a lot of fun. They do not reach the heights of the more expensive Risa instruments, but they get pretty close at a better budget. Like many Chinese factory-made instruments, although this looks great, you can perhaps find the odd tiny flaw if you get your magnifying glass out… and there’s quite a bit of set-up work to do (which I’ll do here). So, a model to be really careful about where to buy it. See it cheaper elsewhere from a company that does drop-shipping and it won’t be as good as it can be!
