With the A-ST-4, Kanile’a have brought out an affordable super tenor ukulele using their far-east made Islander factory, and a clever idea that is too. It features the recognisable Kanile’a super tenor body shape, with its broad lower bout (and flat bottom!), and a laminate acacia body, which given that wood’s relationship to koa, looks the part. The super tenor is a tenor-scale instrument, with a larger body, similar in size to the baritone uke.

So why a super tenor ukulele? I almost want to add, why not at this price – it’s got to be tempting to have something different in your arsenal at such a reasonable price! But it also gives you a bit more depth and body to the sound, while maintaining standard ukulele tuning – with some added darkness to the tone.

The Islander range also appeal to me, as they have wider necks – something customers ask for quite regularly. The 38mm nut width, in a range of sizes and styles is definitely a good thing for me, so I have something to suggest when I get those enquiries!

All in all, this is an interesting instrument, something that little bit different, and at a price that is affordable enough to try out something new.
