Islander is the name give to the ukes that Kanile’a Ukulele, the famous Hawaiian builder, give to the instruments they make in the Far East. This gives them an entry point into the ukulele market, where they can use their expertise to produce cost-friendly models that can still compete, and often out-shine, other instruments at similar price points. The MT-4EQ is a laminate mahogany model, equipped with an active pickup, allowing you to plug in when required, and enjoy the acoustic tone when not.

Most electro acoustics at this price use a very similar, generic pickup system (which isn’t actually bad…), but the Kanile’a Islander MT-4EQ’s system is made by Fishman, and is definitely one of the best of its type – with a control panel mounted on the shoulder of the uke with tone, volume controls and a built in tuner. This gives it a bit of edge in the amplified stakes, but the acoustic sound is no slouch either, with a balanced tone that has a touch of mellowness about it, but still plenty of projection and power.

The MT-4EQ features a wider than average nut width too, 38mm, which gives those with larger fingers more room, and fills a gap where not many ukuleles go. When you think of the average nut width of 35/36mm, it’s average because that’s what most ukes have! So having this option for those who prefer this size is great, particularly considering it’s really decent value.
