The Kanile’a Islander is a wider neck tenor ukulele at a modest price. Although ukes like this, with a 38mm nut width, are sought after by those who need the extra room, there isn’t a huge choice out there without spending the big bucks. Islander, the far-east made brand from Hawaiian legends Kanile’a, do cater for this need with their range, thankfully. The SMT-4, is their laminate spruce and mahogany tenor, a decent bit of kit at a decent price.

The SMT-4 has a nice, even sound, slightly mellow around the edges in common with many laminate ukes. The bracing, which Kanile’a are famous for, does allow the sound to ring out with good volume and some nice overtones. It is fitted with reliable geared tuners and Aquila strings – although having tried one of these with fluorocarbon strings, you can get a bit more punch.

All in all, if you’re after a wider neck, and don’t want to spend the earth, the Islander SMT-4 is a great choice. Neatly made, good tone, and nice and playable too.
