This stunning all solid Hawaiian koa Kiwaya KMT-K tenor ukulele is the top of the line for the Japanese ukulele maker, from their master series. As well as the care and time taken to build this ukulele, with a thin, yet very strong top, it uses master grade koa with beautiful grain and flaming. Koa isn’t always the most responsive material to use for a ukulele’s top, but in this instance it really sings as that top is so thin, and the whole build, so light.

As a result, you get some lovely crispness and a nice chiming quality to the sound, but beyond that there’s some good, rich body in the sound spectrum. It maintains, because of the traditional construction and painstaking detail, a vintage-style tone, as an exacting replica of a Martin 5K instrument.

To fit that vintage theme but appeal to a modern player, The KMT-K ukulele is fitted with Gotoh UPT tuners. These have the lightweight feel and appearance of traditional pegs, but contain gears so you’re not reliant on friction. Fremont black lines are fitted, which aid that vintage tone.

The KMT-K from Kiwaya has a 35mm nut width, combined with a fairly slim neck profile. It is so light it feels really easy to play, and of course, everything is spot on with an instrument of this quality.

There’s no case included from Kiwaya, but I’ll put one with this instrument myself, to keep it safe.
