Fans of vintage Martin instruments will appreciate this tribute to 1930’s 3K models. The oHANA CK-390 looks harmonious and not over-the-top, yet is still packed with visual extras. The fingerboard is very pretty, with the stripes down the centre and nicely shaped end where it meets the fingerboard. There’s maple binding, which contrasts with the golden koa hues, black and white purfling and the star of the show perhaps, the maple inlay on the bottom bout.

This light-feeling concert has considerable volume and an impressive balance between highs and lows. Quickly strum a chord and there a nice, even chime. But run your thumb down the strings one at a time and you find that the bass response is strong, and the trebles are clear and powerful too. These factors combine really well to give that balanced sound.

The CK-390 is equipped with Gotoh friction pegs and Aquila strings, both sensible options for a tribute to a vintage instrument. The main standout for me, especially given the price, is the fact that this uke is made from all solid koa from Hawaii.

For a vintage feel, impressive sound and great specification for the money, this CK-390 is an excellent addition to the Ohana line-up. It’s not a super-polished, modern looking and impeccably finished ukulele, but neither is it trying to be. It’s a tribute to a vintage instrument and does a very good job of doing that well.
