This Kala KA-SCAC-B, which features a solid cedar top, is a real highlight of the manfacturer's many, many series. With a gloss finish and laminate acacia back and sides, it is an update from a previous model called the KA-ABP-CTG (another name that rolls off the tongue!) That was a lovely uke too and to be honest, I was a bit annoyed when it was announced it would be replaced. And yet with the KA-SCAC-B, it's a slight improvement on an already good product.

Kala do things well, but I sometimes wonder if they aren't a bit slow to innovate. They're big, so they keep doing what they've always done. But, while it's not revolutionary, swapping out the standard geared tuners of the forerunner model for Graphtech tune-a-lele tuners seems to be a positive move. These petite, light, rear-facing tuners look like friction pegs, but contain gears. They work well and make the uke a little lighter in your hands... plus I think the overall look is good - classic and smart.

Kala's KA-SCAC-B has Aquila strings, tuned DGBE, with a wound D and G. It has a little more room than a standard Kala neck, with a 38mm nut width, and Nubone nut and saddle.

The sound is full, deep and rich, as you'd expect from a baritone, but with nice projection and an articulate nature making it ideal for picking as well as strumming. It's well made, well finished, sounds good, looks neat, plays well... you can't ask for much more than that!
