LoPrinzi Model A All Solid Mahogany Baritone Ukulele
The LoPrinzi Model A baritone ukulele is a luthier-made instrument, constructed by Donna LoPrinzi, who has her workshop in Clearwater, Florida. She’s a well respected maker of ukuleles, and produces fine-sounding ukes that are extremely well priced, when you consider they’re handmade in the USA.
This particular uke is made from all solid mahogany. A high grade mahogany with a lovely tone, but still… it’s mahogany and therefore unable to match other fancier looking woods for it’s visual appeal (unless you favour traditional looking instruments). But it is a nice mahogany, as it goes, with some dark and light streaks and grain.
More important than how a uke looks is how it sounds and this LoPrinzi has gorgeous, dark tone, which is mellow and rich, yet precise and clear. With DGBE tuning, you naturally get more bass and yet in some cases that can be overly dominant, but this baritone uke definitely has a tightness, clarity and control in its tone.
It is fitted with nylon strings, with the bass strings being metal wound, and plays beautifully. The 38mm nut is wider than I usually favour but combined with the very thin, flattened neck and it’s really pleasant to play as the lack of a thick neck allows your fingers to crane around easily for precise fingering. Grover geared tuners are fitted which do their job well too - naturally enough as they’re great quality units.
This is a uke that’s handmade in the USA, at a price that’s not far off many a far-eastern made ukulele. So it’s a great chance to get a luthier-made instrument that’s a breeze to play, sounds great and has a rarity that makes it a bit special.
