Pono MGBD Deluxe All Solid Mango Baritone Ukulele
Pono make great baritone ukes and the all solid mango version, the MGBD deluxe, with gloss finish, is no exception. I’ll have said it on other listings, I know, but I really do think that baritone is Pono’s best size - with the examples they make standing out for good quality and tone, more so than in soprano, concert or tenor size.
The MGBD’s mango is pleasing on the eye and aside from a simple soundhole decoration, the wood is allowed to do the talking. This Pono is fitted with Grover geared tuners and a set of Ko’Olau strings. These are warm and subtle, so while there’s certainly volume there, the baritone’s DGBE tuning is extra warm and smooth on account of the strings, which don’t fight that tide of richness, but only add to it. This lends well to smooth jazz chords and gentle melodies (though different string types would deliver a bit more clarity and projection, if you want to go that way).
I really like Pono’s baritones (as I have mentioned!), and am often asked which of their main types I prefer, this mango MGBD, the mahogany or the acacia. Despite these different tonewoods I’ve always thought they sound quite similar - a Pono baritone sound, rather than taking on major characteristics from the wood - so perhaps a case of choosing the wood you like the look of most!
