Uma UBU-20S Spruce Baritone with Gig Bag
Taiwanese company Uma have made a pretty looking baritone in the UBU-20S. Like it’s more plain looking mahogany cousin, the UBU-20, this is an all laminate baritone uke, but one that justifies the extra cost over other all laminate models with a nice crispness of tone that ensures that the natural baritone depth isn’t overwhelming - and the trebles stand up against all that bass.
The UBU-20S is well made and set up, and is a pleasure to play - nice and easy on the fingers. The Aquila strings are a standard choice but they work well on this model, which is particularly impressive up to higher reaches of the fretboard - where the trebles ring out well without significantly losing volume. This makes it ideal for players inspired to try playing more challenging pieces, while remaining on a reasonable budget.
The spruce on the top is nicely set off with a black and white soundhole decoration and black binding, and contrasts with the laminate mahogany back and sides too. The satin finish is neat and tidy, as is the build.
True, it’s not an elite level instrument, but it is a step up from the most inexpensive baritones, and plays so well it is worth the investment!
