This is an all solid koa concert ukulele, no #247, made by well respected, experienced UK luthier Dave Morgan. It is a classic looking instrument, with that famous golden-hued koa, sleek lines and minimal decoration, save the headstock motif which gives off an art-deco vibe and looks great.

Dave has been making ukes since 2013 after retiring from a working life of bespoke cabinet making, so what he doesn't know about working with wood you could write on the side of the tent peg it took me three terms to write at school in woodwork (just contrasting our own woodwork skills there!) Since he began making ukuleles they've been in great demand for their nice sound and impressive value, consistently getting 9+ out of 10 on Got A Ukulele, including 9.5 for the most recent review (at the time of writing). In short, Dave's DJ Morgan labelled ukes are built well with a neatness and lightness of touch that delivers lovely tone.

This concert uke has a 37mm nut width, slightly larger than the average concert - giving you a little more room to manouvre without ever seeming cumbersome. As a player who owns ukes witha 35mm nut width, I navigated the neck without thinking - it just seemed comfortable. It was only when I had a look at the spec sheet I'd been sent did I even realise.

The neck of this DJ Morgan ukulele is mahogany, while the fingerboard and bridge are ebony. Corian is used for the nut and saddle and side dots appear on both sides of the neck - meaning it's left-hander friendly too - if the strings are changed over. The finish is a semi-gloss open pore lacquer, giving a lovely sheen to the koa while allowing the top to freely resonate and delivery a warm, sparkling tone. Fitted with clear fluorocarbon strings there's a nice clarity and good note separation, while the koa's more mellow character also comes strongly through in the bix for a nice, all-rounder, balance.
