The Enya EUC-MAD in natural mahogany is attractive yet not quite as over the top as their black and blue versions. It’s the same ukulele underneath, but with a simple gloss finish rather than the colourful stain. And although it’s not as extreme to look at, it’s very attractive with its fingerboard inlay, black faced slotted headstock and abalone soundhole rosette.

There’s a mix of factors influencing the sound, with the solid mahogany body adding some warmth, while the gloss finish hardens the top and makes the sound a little crisper, while the Enya fluorocarbon strings add some shimmer and sparkle to the trebles. All in all, especially as it comes with a decent gig bag, a really good deal for such a well finished, all solid concert ukulele at this price level.

As is often the case with Enya, you can periodically find their ukes cheaper on Amazon. And, if you believe a certian popular YouTuber, the action (height of the strings above the fingerboard) is ‘always great, straight from the box’. Well… I can tell you that’s not the case, and I’ve never had an Enya I didn’t think could do with a lower action. I’ll do that, Amazon won’t. And as for the YouTuber? Just lies, plain and simple. A company that deals with Amazon is rarely at the top of my list of ukes to stock… so this does suggest I like the instrument if I am happy to have it in store despite the Amazon connection!

The fingerboard is richlite, a very smooth, tough man made material, which I think is great for its uniformity and smoothness, and the compensated saddle is nubone. The nut is 36mm which is thinner than the tenor equivalent, but suits me much better (I don’t have small hands but just find 35/36 suits me the best - but that’s a personal choice).
