Chris Perkins All Solid Spruce and Walnut 18" Scale Tenor/Baritone Ukulele
This is a one off instrument that has now been sold.
This ukulele is made by talented luthier Chris Perkins in Staffordshire, with the English uke builder continuing to make innovative instruments that have both exciting new elements and qaulity, tradtional craftsmanship. This one has an 18” scale, a size that’s between that of a tenor and a baritone. It is tuned like a tenor, with Worth Clear strings and a Fremont Low G, but could be re-strung as a DGBE baritone too, with either option available. Stick with one, then switch to another, the choice is yours.
This tenor/baritone ukulele is made with a quality Swiss spruce top, paired with solid walnut on the back and sides of a body which is more baritone size than tenor. Strung as it is like a tenor, this gives an added dimension of warmth and depth, while the spruce top retains a brightness and clarity that pairs that warmth in perfect harmony.
This satin finish instrument has a 38mm nut width, is set up beautifully and plays like a dream - and, with a scale not hugely different to a tenor or a baritone, it would suit players used to either scale. For me, a tenor player, I just picked it up and played and never thought about that slightly longer scale. To be honest, my only problem was putting it down!
This Perkins ukulele is supplied in a hard case, and has a classy looking soundhole decoration inlaid with walnut. There are Grover geared tuners and ebony bridge pins too. The build is skilfully light, so the extra size isn’t transferred into extra weight - certainly it feels very comfortable.
I have long been a big fan of this builder’s work and that is very much continued with this stunning instrument.
