LoPrinzi Custom All Solid Spruce & Maple Tenor Ukulele
This was a one-off instrument that has now sold.
This is a tenor ukulele, handmade in the USA by Donna LoPrinzi, who has been making ukes in Clearwater, Florida for over twenty years. This particular example is a custom tenor, made from top quality spruce on the top, with maple back and sides. It has a tactile satin finish, with the top decorated with an abalone soundhole rosette.
Such is the precision of how it plays, and the lovely, chiming, bell-like tone that it has that it’s surprising how a luthier-made instrument can cost what is, in effect, a very reasonable price indeed. It has plenty of volume and projection, and really holds its own going further up the neck. When playing, I often use just to two top strings and leave the G and C open as a drone - which can lead to the C string sounding a bit dominant. But even fretting the E and the A at the 10th fret and those high notes sing out and compete with the open C. It’s a lovely sound and really suited to someone who wants to experiment further up the neck.
This LoPrinzi tenor uke is lovely to play, with a 36.5mm nut width neck paired with a flattened neck profile that makes it seem even roomier than it is, and very comfortable (even for me, who generally plays 35mm). That flattened neck feels great, and the uke overall, with it’s lightness, feels excellent and natural in your hands.
This custom LoPrinzi has Graphtech’s tune-a-lele tuners fitted - rear facing units that look like pegs, but have effective gears inside - so they look like friction pegs and act like gears. Clear fluorocarbon strings are fitted, which seem a good match to the instrument too.
