Martin Beck #182 Handmade All Solid Spruce and Rosewood Concert Ukulele
This was a one-off instrument that has now sold.
This is a concert ukulele made on Vancouver Island from luthier Martin van Humbeck, who makes his name under the (sensibly) shortened version, Martin Beck. They are exquisitely hand crafted, with so much thought going into the construction, bracing (in this case, Hybrid X bracing) and the selection of materials - alongside extensive, tasteful decoration.
This one, number 182, has a AAAA grade Engelmann spruce top, paired with AAAA grade Indian Rosewood back and sides. These are separated by bubinga binding, while the soundhole decoration features burled Pacific yew, more bubinga and Paua abalone shell inlays. On the headstock, which is faced with Indian rosewood, is a mother of pearl ‘evergreen moon’ design.
While top quality tonewoods are the order of the day, this concert ukulele is equipped with excellent hardware too, including Evo gold frets, Worth Clear fluorocarbon strings, a tweed hard shell case and brilliant Gotoh UPT tuners. The uke is finished with tru-oil, giving a super thin protective layer and a touch of shine, but allowing the wood to resonate to its fullest. The but with is 36.5mm and there’s an intricate side soundport too.
A striking feature is the Amazon rosewood fingerboard and bridge, where the heartwood has been used to great effect, mirrored on the bridge.
The sound is loud, crisp and clear with a strong initial bright attack which sings out with epic sustain, then filling through complex mids and a touch of dark richness as the notes finally ebb away. It’s extremely pretty to look at and has a fantastic sound to match.
