Martin Beck All Solid Spruce & Walnut Concert Ukulele #171
This was a one off ukulele that has now been sold.
This is a handmade ukulele, from Canadian luthier Martin Van Humbeck (you can see why he goes by Martin Beck for his builds... imagine putting your full name into a headstock with mother of pearl inlay!) Martin hails from Vancouver Island and makes instruments which really sing - with the emphasis on an incredible sound.
This ukulele, #171 has an AAA Englemann spruce solid top, paired with AAA grade solid black walnut back and sides. There's plenty of beautiful additions to the build, and I'm having a hard time choosing my favourite between the gorgeous inlaid abalone hummingbird on the headstock, or the asymmetric soundhole rosette, made from spalted birds eye maple.
This low G fitted concert uke has Worth clear strings and Gotoh 510 super mini geared tuners - really compact tuners that work beautifully. There's a satin, tru-oil finish, fitted strap buttons and a tweed hard case.
The low G emphasises a great bass response, with plenty of volume and sustain - with really excellent retention of volume further up the neck - with the bright spruce highs complementing the depth from the low G really well. A little extra volume is delivered directly to the player through Martin’s signature side sound port. The 35mm nut is familiar and comfortable and it is a pleasure to play.
This is a beautiful ukulele, a handmade masterpiece in the very top level of concert scale instruments.
