Pete Howlett All Solid Hawaiian Koa Tenor Electro Ukulele
THIS WAS A ONE-OFF UKULELE, NOW SOLD.
This is a great example of the work of Pete Howlett, the Snowdonia-based luthier. This Hawaiian style tenors have a lovely shape, with a relatively shallow body (6.3cm at the deepest point), making them nice and light to hold. The quality of materials and construction means that despite this not having the biggest body, it’s got lots of volume and a characterful, mellow and rich tone.
This Howlett tenor features a Hawaiian koa body, with nice golden hues and flaming, under a satin finish. It is fitted with bridge pins, Worth Brown strings and quality Der Jung geared tuners. There’s also a good quality passive Artec undersaddle pickup (played through a cheap amp - these sound quite thin, but through good kit and the possibility for great tone is endless). A wound low G has been fitted to this example, boosting the bass and warmth.
The tone is complex and rich, with a nice sparkle and clarity from the trebles competing well with the fitted low G. It has a reverb-esque sound, with a touch of an echoing quality, punctuated with lovely overtones. This is not a cheap ukulele, and for craftsmanship of this quality it’s true, you have to pay… but the sound does not disappoint… it’s a magic little thing!
