This is an automatic tuner that you can use to quickly tune up your ukulele and wind your strings up or down (so, useful when changing strings, to rapidly take the tension off old strings, or bring new strings up to pitch).

It’s handy little unit, with a variety of different modes - but to be honest, having used automatic tuners for some years in my workshop - the mode that’s best is ‘semi’, for semi-automatic. You clip the attachment to your tuning peg, select which string it is, and pick the string. The tuner will detect the note you’re playing and move up or down to the correct note, then stop (with a loud beep to tell you it’s done). Semi automatic means you’re in control of telling it what string you’re playing.

It just does this a little bit at a time so you’re in no danger of it going out of control and winding until a string snaps! That’s where the semi-automatic feature comes in handy, as you can use the up and down buttons to continuously tune up (or down). This way, it becomes an automatic peg winder. So if you’re taking off old strings you can just keep going til they’re floppy. Tuning up new strings and you can get close to where you need to be by ear, rather than allowing to inch up, bit by bit.

A couple of important notes. It won’t work with friction pegs, only geared tuners. It doesn’t really work with planetary geared tuners like Gotoh UPT’s, as they have two tuners that tune up by turning clockwise and two that tune up by turning anticlockwise. Normal geared tuners are what this is designed for.

It comes with a USB charging cable. It also can be used as a metronome. To be honest, I haven’t ever done that as the band I am in has a drummer, so we follow him, whether he’s fast or slow!
