ised in late 2020, which is still an all solid Hawaiian koa ukulele - but has changed from the high grade koa, to AA grade, to keep the costs down. This is still just as effective as a tonewood, but doesn’t have as much of the highly prized flaming that is so sought after (and as a result, makes it much more expensive). The AKK3 tenor has been modelled on the popular AMM3 they also produce (in Mahogany), with a slightly larger than average bottom bout. This one is a cracker… fat bottomed ukes they make the rockin’ world go around!

Of course, this is not what you’d call cheap BUT, it is cheap as far as quality, all solid koa instruments go. I’ve spoken to many players who have an ambition to one day own an all solid koa ukulele, and this new model brings that aspiration closer to a larger number of budgets.

The koa might not be the top end visual grade, but it is still very pretty, with an abalone soundhole decoration and abalone binding settings things off nicely. aNueNue have gone back to rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge for this model, which matches well to the koa hue, while there’s an attractive slotted headstock too.

The tone is crisp and projects well, with a nice, even chime, plenty of volume and pretty harmonics. Koa isn’t always the loudest wood, but the combination here of that big bottom and aNueNue’s black water strings really gives it a strong voice - which isn’t shy at all!

There’s a fantastic gig bag with the AKK3 too, a semi rigid black model which offers excellent protection, without the weight of a hard case. This tenor has a 36mm nut width and gently radiused frets which help with barre chords.
