This is the aNN-Bwhale, or Kyas Black Whale from aNueNue, a fantastic beast of a uke. It's got a bit of everything... great balance, even warmth, delicate sparkle and a response when picked that's exceedingly pretty - a slight softness that reminds me of piano hammers. It's gorgeous to play and to listen to.

It has what is known as a double top, a sandwich of beautiful stained curly black maple over Western red cedar. This is totally different to a laminate - instead the research of years of R&D to combine the qualities of both tonewoods. And it's true, maple is warm and subtle, and the Black Whale ukulele has some of that... but it has the sustain and crisp chiming quality of cedar too. Add in the lovely bass response of the rosewood back and sides and it's a real winner.

The visual side of things needs a mention too - with lots going on - design features put together for ukulele artist Kyas Ryo. There's an ebony and maple whale tail at the bottom of the soundboard, plus a really modern, striking and certainly to me, gorgeous soundhole decoration. The headstock and fretboard have beautifully crafted whale details.
