aNueNue UT10 BF Solid Spruce Top Black Forest Ukulele

£185.00

With this UT-10, aNueNue have turned to the dark side, with a satin black finish on this tenor ukulele. This dark beauty looks great with its distinctive aNueNue body shape and cutaway, with the dark green top contrasted by the textured, slightly raised scratch guard. Maple binding separates the solid spruce top from the laminate mahogany back and sides.

If you’ve perused a few of aNueNue’s options in their colour series of ukes, you might be wondering why this one is a little more expensive. The slightly cheaper ones have a maple fingerboard and bridge, with circular position parkers. This one has a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, with little stars inlaid into the fretboard. That, as far as I can tell, is the difference, aside from the fact the headstock here matches the top colour, rather than having just the wood. It isn’t better sounding, but I suppose it must cost a little more to produce. The fact that the blue one has rosewood and is a touch cheaper blows my theory out of the water a little… But either way, the price isn’t bad at all.

When talking about these UT-10 ukuleles, I always want to stress that, despite it looking fancy, the fact it has a bit of flair in no way detracts from the fact it is a very well made, nice sounding ukulele. You might think you’re paying extra for those good looks but honestly, it stands up well compared to others in this price range. If you consider many ‘fancy’ looking ukes at this price are still just laminates, and this one has a) a solid top and b) a really nice gig bag, then it is clearly possible to have your cake and eat it in terms of attractiveness and value.

The tone is just on the brighter side of the sound spectrum (if you imagine the extreme ends of the scale as being bright and warm). Spruce gives some punch and projection, but there’s more balance than you might expect, with a nice bit of ‘body’ to the sound, meaning it’s not either tinny or one dimensional.

The nut width is 35mm, which is what I prefer, but with the market these days often wanting a little extra width, it might have been an idea to make the neck a touch wider. But, that said, it’s comfortable and unchallenging. Geared tuners and aNueNue Clear Water fluorocarbon strings are fitted. The action of these aNueNue ukes is a little higher than I’d go for myself, but I’ll lower each one before it goes out. The synthetic bone saddle is punishingly hard, so best I do that for you!

Just one minor, boring point. Inside this uke it says UT-10. So I am going with that, although all my paperwork lists this as an aNueNue UCT-10.

A quick reminder. Shipping is included in the UK. To ship to the EU, if your order is less than £200, you’ll need to add £15 shipping to your basket. For the rest of the world, for orders under £400, you need to add £25 shipping to your basket.
