This is the Kala KA-CT-SA-TG, an all solid acacia tenor ukulele from the contour series.

Kala are well known for reliable ukuleles, but this series shows that they’re able to respond to the desires of the market and add some modern touches to their instruments. These ukes have a larger than normal bottom bout, a comfort edge and a wider, 38mm nut width. Personally, the regular 35mm nut with they do suits me just fine but… it got to the stage where you could tell you were playing a Kala with your eyes closed. So doing something slightly differently, especially with more and more people looking for wider necks, seems sensible.

The KA-CT-SA-TG has an all solid acacia body, with an attractive wood grain and a gloss finish. There’s a slotted headstock which is quite slender, looking smart and not adding as much weight. Acacia is a fairly dense wood, so this feels quite a substantial instrument, and while it’s different to your ‘regular Kala’, it’s still comfortable to play.

The acacia gives a sweet, mellow warmth, a laid back sort of tone that’s rich and dark. The KA-CT-SA-TG has Aquila strings fitted, and they seem to suit the mix - though a swith to fluorocarbon would deliver a little more sustain and brighten things up a little. That said, that’s me projecting my preference for brighter ukes, and if it’s mellow you’re after, you’re in the right place.

These contour series tenor ukuleles from Kala have a wider than normal body and don’t fit into all gig bags and cases - so it’s handy that a nicely made, well-padded gig bag is included.
