Kala KA-ASZCT-ST All Solid Wide Neck XL Tenor Ukulele
I am a big fan of this ‘XL tenor’, which is tuned like a tenor (with a low G in this case), but a longer scale and slightly larger body, both of which are in between a baritone and tenor. While this might look like an attempt to hook in collectors who have one of everything else, the Kala KA-ASZCT-ST actually makes a lot of sense.
The extra tension of that longer scale gives the low G a real pop, and nice sustain (anyone who has experienced a ‘flabby’ sounding low G need not worry here). And the corresponding tension on the treble strings works too. They’re rectified nylon, and benefit from that extra ring from the longer neck, competing nicely with the low G for a pleasing balance.
The Kala KA-ASZCT-ST has a solid spruce top, which is paired with solid ziracote on the back and sides. The finish is satin, with a tactile feel, and there are classy looking maple bindings and a dark ziracote rosette. Add in a slotted headstock with durable geared tuners and it looks as good as it sounds.
The nut width is a wide 38mm, and with the extra length on the scale too, this makes it ideal for anyone who has larger fingers. However, if you’re not 'large-fingered’, don’t worry, it’s still a ukulele after all, and perfectly manageable for all.
