This is an all solid mango tenor ukulele from Kala, from their Metropolitan series. This is a different factory from Kala's main Chinese output, with this one built in Indonesia. While it may not be as familiar in feel to the Kala ukes people have known over many years, anyone who has played a Pono may well still get that familiar feeling. It has the fabulous build quality they're known for, with a real step up in sound (and, to be fair, price) from most Kala ukes.

The solid mango used with the Kala KA-MNGG-T is very pretty, and looks great under the flawless gloss finish. It provides a rich, warm, sweet and mellow tone. It's not a bright, in your face tone at all, but has a lot of sweet overtones and complexity. It's mellow nature is interesting too - I'm often asked for my suggestion for mellow, warmer sounding ukes, and this is definitely going to one I'll mention if asked again in future.

The Kala KA-MNGG-T has ABS black binding and soundhole rosette, good quality geared tuners and D'addario Titanium strings. The latter do lend themselves to gentle, smooth playing - jazzy tunes, rich chords and gentle melodies. Those looking for more volume and punch could brighten this character with some fluorocarbon strings, but it's not something I'd say needs to be done - just there's an option there to change its character should you so wish.

Kala have a good name for beginner and intermediate ukes, but don’t be put off with the name in this mid-range to top end price bracket, as it’s not like other Kala ukes you’ve played before - being much closer to a higher end Pono than the Kala ukes many know.
