Following on from their highly rates other sizes in their student series, Kiwaya have now made this KTU-1 tenor ukulele.

Like the other sizes they do, it’s a laminate mahogany model, with no real frills in the appearance (aside from the slotted headstock, which is a nice touch). But really comes alive when played, with a really impressive volume, with good projection and a big voice. There’s none of the muffled 'inward’ sounding tone you can get with some laminates - this KTU-1 from Kiwaya is loud, with a bright, forward and powerful tone.

The KTU-1 has a 38mm nut width, handy for those with larger fingers or those who just want a bit more room on the fingerboard. It is supplied too, with a basic gig bag.

The tuners are good quality, and an upgrade over those you see on other sizes in this Kiwaya series, with fluorocarbon strings fitted with feel light and easy under your fingers.

I haven’t raved quite as much about this model as I have with other student series Kiwaya models as the price is a bit higher. I think, especially with that hard-to-find wider neck, and big sound, it is worth every penny, but it’s not quite the bite-my-hand-off bargain of say, the soprano. But still, despite it looking plain, it is an excellent choice for someone who wants volume and fingerboard space.
