Millar Custom Camphor Wood & Cocobolo Tenor Ukulele

£899.00

This in an interesting one off tenor ukulele from Millar, made in their custom shop by their head luthier. This one has a solid camphor wood top, a lovely looking material that also has great tonal qualities - or at least it certainly does with this example, which has great note separation and excellent clarity with picked notes. With the fitted low G too, that clarity is blended into a well balanced mix when strummed too - with a tight, rich sound delivered. It is very nice when picked, yes, but you would expect that from a) a Millar and b) a luthier-made higher end instrument like this. But actually that strummed sound really stands out. I can't explain why... perhaps the balance, the fullness or the control... but when testing this one out I strummed quite a lot. With a strum and then a palm mute, it's a really lovely mix of tones blending in unison.

I have now moved onto a new paragraph simply to give you pause for breath there! (You might be able to tell I like the sound). Onto the looks... The top really resonates visually under the gloss, as well as when played to produce that big, controlled volume. It's chocolate and biscuit brown together - a handsome grain and pattern. It reminds me of my cat! (If you don't like cats, pretend I said dog. If you don't like either, pretend I said nothing other than it's very pretty wood!) The back and sides are solid cocobolo, with this example sporting an attractive, lighter-toned sapwood streak too. There's a lot of abalone detail as well, but the fact the wood has such character, to me doesn't make it feel overloaded. The slotted headstock looks good too, sporting as it does, in my view, the most stylish ukulele logo out there.

This Millar tenor ukulele has a 35mm nut width and has been set up here with a smooth playing action that's no so low you lose the volume. That volume and sustain is impressive up the fingerboard, aided in part by the aNueNue Blue Moon fluorocarbon strings that have been fitted. It plays nicely, looks great and sounds fab and what more do you need? (Well, if it was free it would be nice, but you can't have everything!

At the bottom of the page you'll find some standard add-ons. In this case, you may want to add a case or bag to this Millar custom ukulele, or a strap button or two. You don't need the 'fit low G' option though, as this already has one.
