Millar PO-J All Solid Alder & Walnut Jumbo Tenor Ukulele

£749.00

The Millar PO-J has a jumbo tenor body, which is a regular tenor ukulele scale simply with a body of larger proportions. In this case, the top is made from alder – a wood that was once commonly used in instrument making and is making a reappearance here. It has golden, sandy hues, but despite the purple heart binding and black and white inlays, it is relatively plain to look at, particularly as the soundboard is larger than an average tenor. The back is a different story, with a very attractive, richly grained walnut on display under a satin finish.

With a larger soundboard and bigger body, there’s a greater depth of tone and a slightly deeper colour to the sound, compared with a regular tenor. There are dense, rich undertones and a swathe of warmth, which despite the strong performance of the treble strings, does give an overall warmer vibe, tonally. It is particularly resonant and complex when played with the thumb and interestingly, there’s quite a lot of variation depending on where you strum. Immediately in front of the soundhole and the sound is bold and loud. A little higher up the neck and there’s more projection from the trebles.

This Millar PO-J uses all solid tonewood for the top, back and sides. As ever with the Taiwanese brand, they use quality Der Jung geared tuners. In this case they’re an aged bronze look, which are especially good-looking. The Millar PO-J has been fitted with Martin fluorocarbon strings, which add a little sparkle against all that richness.

The majority of Millar’s range uses a 35mm nut width, but this model has a wider, 38mm neck, with just under 30mm between the G and A strings. This is paired with a fairly chunky neck. While of course it’s still narrower than a guitar (so anybody could manage it in theory), this combination makes it ideal for larger hands. The larger body and the attractive slotted headstock combine to make the ukulele balance well in your hands, if not being the lightest of ukes.

Although perfectly capable of a pleasant strummed tone, this instrument really excels with picking and chord melody. Individual notes sound clear, resonant and rich – giving a clarity and complex nature to your playing. And it retains excellent volume further up the neck, so would suit someone who plans to use more of the fingerboard. And played with the thumb or fingertips, rather than a nail, it has an uncannily piano-like sound.
