This is a really beautiful sounding solid spruce top instrument, the Millar SW-T tenor ukulele. Paired with solid walnut on the back and sides, and with an attractive slotted headstock, it's a classic looking instrument, which is prettily highlighted by purple heart binding and maple and ebony inlays.

The sound is bold and loud, with a brightness you'd associate with spruce, but it's mellowed by the walnut, making it less forward and slightly warmer than many a spruce top - while keeping plenty of projection. It's clear and articulate, but without being brittle or overly forward. It's a good sounding instrument, that's for sure.

While the satin finish body of the SW-T is lightly made, with thin tonewood, the neck feels more substantial with a wider, 38mm nut width. This instrument was created with the UK market in mind, where the demand is there for more space on the fingerboard, demonstrating the company's desire to adapt and provide ukuleles with specifications that people want. Personally, I am a solid 35/36mm man, as that's what I'm used to - but those desiring that extra space have now had their requests answered.

The Millar SW-T tenor was fitted with D'addario Titanium strings, which are amongst my least favourite - so I've refitted this uke with World of Ukes Clarity - fluorocarbon strings made by Worth. Because of that pleasing softness of tone, I felt it could take a string that delivers more punch and I love the results. There are also attractive aged-look bronze Der Jung tuners fitted.
