The first thing to strike you with the Ohana PKT-200G is the pineapple shape, but beyond that there are some good visual features too, like a generous helping of abalone inlay, hardwood binding and a nicely applied gloss finish. The mango wood has some pleasing grain and shimmer too.

The Ohana PKT-220G’s mango is sweet sounding. It’s sparkles nicely in the trebles, sustains well and has a slightly muted initial attack, which is very pretty. By this I mean it the sound doesn’t come heavily forth immediately but seems to swell and grow.

The larger pineapple body gives a little extra volume and a more mellow character to the tone of this all-solid ukulele. It has Grover geared tuners and is fitted with Aquila strings.

The PKT-220G has a slightly wider, 36mm nut width and a more palm-filling, rounded neck profile. With the larger body, there is a bit more weight there too. I don’t find this an issue at all as there’s more to get hold of! And the difference with a regular tenor is not great enough for me to have the slightest difficulty in holding and playing this pineapple.

This Ohana tenor ukulele gives you a wood that’s not as prevalent (although it is becoming more so), and a shape that’s not the norm either, going to show that Ohana are always on the lookout to fill gaps in the market. It’s a nice, different instrument that sounds a little different too. But that difference isn’t huge, so I wouldn’t add one to my collection expecting a pineapple to sound radically different to a regular tenor. But, I would consider it simply as a good value tenor instrument in its own right.
