There are few different variants of the VTAB EL-55 and this is the ‘natural’ finish, the EL-55N concert ukulele. The most popular is the EL-55D (dark finish) after it had a positive review on the Got A Ukulele independent review site. This one is the same uke but just looks a little different!

It is a laminate mahogany concert ukulele and of course, there are a great many of those on the market today at this sort of price. I’ve played many, many ‘serious beginner’ ukes like this and this is one of the best I have found. Most entry level ukes have Aquila Strings which are fine and reliable but don’t really get the best sound of a laminate wood body - and can contribute towards cheaper ukes sounding a bit ‘boxy’. However, this EL-55N concert uke has clear fluorocarbon strings on instead, and has a really impressive tone for the price. The individual notes sound out more clearly, and yet it’s not overly bright, with a good bit of warmth to the sound as well.

Another thing you can encounter with relatively inexpensive ukuleles is the set up being poor and playability issues as a result. And to be honest, when I get these the string height is a bit high for optimum comfort. But they will take a lower string height without issue and I’ve lowered many, many actions on these VTAB ukes quickly and effectively. Some cheaper ukes can give buzzing problems when you lower the string height but I find these behave themselves very well and when they leave my workshop, they are nice and comfortable to play.

As I write this I’ve looked around a bit and have found a couple of places that do them for a little bit less money. If you’re comfortable doing the set up yourself it’s fine to save a few pounds but I am not able to do the work and discount the price as far as places that just send them to you, ‘as is’. But I definitely think, given the difference from how they play when I get them to the way they play when a customer gets one… it’s certainly worth a little bit extra!
